Is it really fair to review a new place based on one dish? Probably not. But what if that dish is really, really good?
So good that you just want to tell the world about it?
Kali's Island Spice is the newest option at the St. Roch food hall in the design district. (For those keeping track, they took over the space formerly occupied by Jaffa, which has moved across the hall into an the larger space formerly occupied by the seafood place that had raw oysters etc. The larger space has allowed them to enhance and increase their menu, which I'm excited to try.. but I digress...)
Kali's full menu includes all kinds of traditional Jamaican specialties that I can't wait to try - everything from jerk chicken and braised oxtail to green papaya or palm and mango salad. I'll be back - soon - to try more.
The Jamaican pies here - spicy beef, chicken or vegetable - are made fresh every. single day. Except Sunday. Today. So mine wasn't even at its best. But I took one bite and smiled. Flaky. Balanced filling, with a good hit of spice and a *little* bit of sweet to balance. Heaven. Large enough to be a meal for one unless you're starving. Oh and it's $5. Easily the best bargain here in this market.
Next time I just need to try the other items first and take my pie to go so I have more room. -

I had the oxtail at Kali's and in one word I can only say DELICIOUS....the meat is so flavorful and it easily comes out of the bones....the rice & peas is soooo goooood too...totally recommend.

The Island Conch Salad was so amazing I had to post this. The conch was extremely fresh and mixed in a kind of ceviche dressing. And it was large. I would have gladly paid $20, but it was $12. A great summer meal. It can feed two adults, or one ravenous person. I felt like I was back on the beach in the Caribbean.

I got the absolute worst case of food poisoning after eating at this restaurant. I unfortunately had to go the the hospital and when I called and emailed to advise the St. Roch management of the situation nothing was done. Do not eat here unless you plan on an emergency room visit and a visit from the IV Doc.
